Breaking News: Chicago Priest Removed Amid Child Molestation Allegations

The Archdiocese of Chicago removed Father Martin Nyberg, 28, a newly ordained catholic priest at a Lincoln Park parish and school, from ministry amid accusations of child exploitation and molestation. The Archdiocese said it reported the claims to authorities and offered assistance to those who made accusations.

A Chicago native, Nyberg was ordained less than four months ago at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. He served as an associate pastor at St. Josaphat Parish and School in Lincoln Park since July 2024. Before his ordination, he served as a deacon at St. Paul of the Cross Church and School in Park Ridge from June 2023 to May 2024.

This distressing news highlights the ongoing issue of sexual abuse within religious institutions and the importance of holding clergy accountable for the harm they cause children.

The Nyberg Case: What We Know

In a letter to St. Josaphat Church and St. Paul of the Cross, Cardinal Blase Cupich announced that the Archdiocese had been notified that the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was investigating allegations of “child exploitation and child molestation” against Nyberg that allegedly occurred during a public penance service. The Archdiocese wouldn’t say if the allegations occurred at St. Paul of the Cross, St. Josaphat, or both.

The Archdiocese asked Nyberg to step away from ministry while civil authorities and the church’s Independent Review Board investigate the claims. Cardinal Cupich said the accused priest “strenuously” denies the accusations and has agreed to cooperate with the process fully.

Understanding the Impact on Survivors

Sexual abuse, especially by someone in a position of authority, such as a clergy member, can cause profound and long-lasting trauma. Survivors often experience a complex range of emotions, including shame, fear, and betrayal. This trauma can have enduring effects, manifesting as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other behavioral changes. These psychological scars often impact every aspect of a survivor's life, from personal relationships to academic and professional performance.

Parents of survivors are also profoundly affected. They may feel guilt for not protecting their child, anger at the abuser, and confusion about the best way to support their child moving forward. Navigating this emotional terrain is incredibly difficult, and families often need professional guidance to help them heal.

How Parents Can Support Their Children

If your child has experienced sexual abuse, it is vital to approach the situation with care, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to their well-being. Here are some steps that parents can take to support their child during this challenging time:

  • Believe Your Child: The first and most crucial step is to believe your child. Many survivors fear they will not be believed, especially when the abuser is someone trusted by the community, like a priest. Assure your child that you believe them and that they are not to blame for what happened.
  • Provide a Safe Space: Creating a safe and supportive environment is essential. Encourage open communication, listen without judgment, and let your child express their feelings at their own pace. Remind them that their feelings are valid and that they are not alone.
  • Seek Professional Help: Counseling and therapy can be incredibly beneficial for survivors of sexual abuse. A trained therapist can help your child process their emotions, develop coping strategies, and work toward healing. Therapy can also be valuable for parents, helping them navigate their own feelings and better support their child.
  • Understand the Legal Process: The legal system can be intimidating, but understanding the process can empower both survivors and their families. Working with an experienced attorney with experience handling sexual abuse cases can help ensure that your child’s rights are protected and that those responsible are held accountable.
  • Maintain Routine and Normalcy: While your child's life may feel upended, maintaining some sense of routine can provide stability. Encourage your child to continue with normal activities as much as they feel comfortable, whether it’s school, sports, or hobbies. This can help them feel more in control during a tumultuous time.
  • Connect with Support Networks: There are numerous organizations dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual abuse, such as the SNAP Network and RAINN. These groups offer resources, peer support, and advocacy, helping survivors and their families navigate their journeys toward recovery.

The allegations against Father Nyberg highlight a broader issue of abuse within religious institutions. While the Catholic Church has made strides in addressing sexual abuse, cases like this serve as a reminder that there is still much work to be done.

Survivors of clergy abuse have the right to seek justice and compensation for the harm they have endured, and the legal system provides avenues for holding abusers and the institutions that enable them accountable.

Filing a Civil Lawsuit

Survivors of sexual abuse may file civil lawsuits against not only the abuser but also the institutions that allowed the abuse to occur. In cases involving clergy, this often means taking legal action against the church or diocese. These lawsuits can result in financial compensation for medical expenses, therapy, lost income, and pain and suffering.

Holding Institutions Accountable

Religious institutions, schools, and other organizations can be held liable for failing to protect children from abuse. This can include negligent hiring practices, insufficient background checks, or ignoring warning signs of abusive behavior. Holding these institutions accountable is critical in preventing future abuse and ensuring that survivors receive the justice they deserve.

Confidentiality and Sensitivity

The legal process can be daunting, but it is designed to support survivors through every step. Many cases are handled with strict confidentiality to protect the survivor’s identity, and experienced attorneys will work tirelessly to ensure that your child’s case is handled with the utmost respect and care.

Empowering Survivors to Seek Justice

For survivors of sexual abuse, seeking legal recourse can be empowering. It is an opportunity to reclaim a sense of control and hold abusers accountable for their actions. While no amount of compensation can undo the harm caused, achieving a legal victory can provide closure, validation, and financial support to aid in the healing process.

Empowering survivors also involves giving them a voice. By speaking out, survivors can help raise awareness of the ongoing issue of sexual abuse within institutions and inspire others to come forward. The courage of survivors to share their stories plays a vital role in driving change and promoting safer environments for all.
