Asbestos & Mesothelioma
Asbestos was a commonly used substance used for the insulation of buildings but is no longer used due to the discovery that it causes severe and sometimes fatal health problems. Asbestos is composed of fine microscopic fibers that are easily inhaled. These fibers trigger the formation of Mesothelioma, a cancer of the epithelial layer of cells, (a membrane), found in the abdominal cavity, heart and lungs. The disease can lie dormant for substantial periods of time and may not develop into a cancer for 20 years or more. Nearly all mesotheliomas have been linked to Asbestos as a cause. Asbestos has also been linked to other forms of lung cancer.
Asbestos fibers can also cause a condition known as Asbestosis. Asbestosis occurs when the asbestos fibers become trapped in the lung. As the body's immune system attempts to dissolve the fibers, the lung becomes scarred. This condition is irreversible and slowly degrades a person's ability to breathe normally.
These conditions can lead to years of pain, suffering and even death. If you or a loved one has been exposed to Asbestos and has developed Mesothelioma, Asbestosis or other ailment, the Attorneys at Abels & Annes, P.C. are here to help.
